Guisquil.
The vegetable you can see in the photo is Guisquil. It grows on a tine vine which looks like it couldn't bear the weight of it's own vegetables. there's one in The Cambalacha which we water with love and it turn it produces a plentiful crop. It's like a squash and as it's in season we're eating plenty of it. The most common foods here are red beans, rice, eggs, corn tortillas, there's also lot's of chilli, delicious soups from the market stands, tamales made from corn, boiled and served in huge banana leafs, chipiílin soup and of course the cocoa and coffee are delicious... we'll have to come back another time to try jocotes, a fruit that grows on big old trees all around San Marcos. The children can't wait for them to mature and eat them green with salt and chilli. And yes, we've been trying out the local beers; Gallo a blonde beer and our favorite, Moza, rich and dark.....
(Mums, of course we miss your home made food)
